Surigao City initiates a “garbage-to-food aid” exchange program

Mindanaoherald | Surigao City initiates a “garbage-to-food aid” exchange program | BUTUAN CITY – To save the earth and help families get food on the table, the city government of Surigao has started a program called “Imo Basura, Pulihan nan Ayuda.” People can trade their trash for food.
“Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II sees this as a top priority,” the Surigao City Public Information Office (PIO) said in a statement on Thursday. “The program will be led by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office.”
According to the statement, the program will be run in every village in Surigao City, beginning on Wednesday in Barangay Canlanipa. This is part of the local government’s MPD-AKAP project, which stands for “Mabilis at Pantay na Disribusyon ng Ayuda Kapalit ng Plastik na Basura, at Iba Pa.”
People who can get rid of 25 kilograms of trash will get 5 kilograms of rice, 3 cans of different foods, and 3 packs of noodles through the program.
Plastic cellophane, plastic bottles, tin cans, and boxes are some of the trash and waste that needs to be picked up.
“Residents must go to their own barangay halls to weigh their collected trash,” PIO said, adding that the city government would also post barangay dates for when residents can have their collected trash weighed. (via PNA)
