MindanaoHerald | Modern technology is implemented in Davao City to facilitate precision agriculture | DAVAO CITY – The City Agriculturist Office (CAgro) is increasingly focusing on the integration of precision agriculture technologies, such as the Geographic Information System (GIS), to modernize agricultural practices.
CAgro’s Agricultural Biosystem Engineering Division chief, Christian John Abrenica, stated in a news release on Friday that the technology enables the precise application of inputs such as water, pesticides, and fertilizers, thereby enhancing overall efficiency.
Maps are generated through the use of software, and we are presently in the process of creating one for Davao City that provides information on the land cover and the crops that are cultivated. “This assists us in the strategic utilization of irrigation methods and machinery,” Abrenica stated.
Also, the maps facilitate the identification of areas that are susceptible to landslides or floods, thereby facilitating the development of proactive mitigation strategies.
Handheld Global Positioning System (GPS) devices are utilized by CAgro to monitor machinery and record crop locations for inventory purposes.
In addition, the office employs soil sensors to ascertain the suitability of the land for planting by detecting moisture and temperature levels.
Another tool, variable rate technology, assists farmers in identifying crop issues at an early stage, particularly in large plantations, enabling targeted interventions.
“This technology helps pinpoint portions of crops that may have failed to grow properly, so farmers can focus their efforts where it is needed,” according to Abrenica.
A weather monitoring system is also employed by CAgro to provide real-time data, which assists producers in determining the optimal planting dates.
The office provides assistance in the evaluation of disaster-related damage by operating two drones to acquire aerial photos.
Abrenica argued that contemporary technology has rendered agricultural labor more appealing and efficient, thereby motivating the younger generation to investigate the possibility of farming.
