MindanaoHerald | The Department of Agriculture (DA) provides P69 million in assistance to producers in Caraga | LAS NIEVES, Agusan del Norte – The Department of Agriculture (DA) helped thousands of farmers in the Caraga Region make a living by giving them PHP69 million worth of tools, equipment, and animals on Friday.

As part of the celebrations for President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s 67th birthday, these types of help were given to 41 farmer associations and unions. These groups included rice and corn farmers, livestock raisers, and high-value crop producers.

There is PHP28.6 million going to 15 groups in Agusan del Norte, PHP14.4 million going to 9 groups in Agusan del Sur, PHP1.5 million going to 3 groups in the Dinagat Islands, PHP5.9 million going to 5 cooperatives in Surigao del Norte, and PHP18.6 million going to 9 groups in Surigao del Sur.

Farm tractors, hauling trucks, combine harvesters, corn shellers, rice threshers, seed and soybean sorters, floating tillers, multicommodity threshers, and chest freezers were some of the tools that were sent out.

Las Nieves farmers who get help

In Las Nieves, Arlan Mangelen, executive director of Agusan Del Norte and DA-13 (Caraga), and Mayor Karen Rosales led the handing over of interventions to 11 farmers’ groups and cooperatives. These groups and cooperatives will receive a total of PHP23.1 million, which will help 528 people in the town.

He said at the event, “This distribution of interventions is a joint effort with other government agencies and the provincial and municipal governments of Agusan del Norte and Las Nieves.”

He stressed that tackling poverty and other important problems in the community needs a coordinated effort from everyone, including the public and private sectors.

Rosales thanked the Marcos administration for helping the farmers in the town. He said that the help came from the hard work of the local farmers’ unions and associations.

Thankful farmers

The head of the Malungtarong Wes Las Nieves Corn Cluster Farmers’ Association, Ruel Torralba, said that the combined corn harvester his group got had a positive effect.

He spoke for his 73-member group, which is in charge of 215 hectares of corn farms in the western part of town. “This equipment will help speed up the harvesting process, save us time, and make sure that our corn products are market-ready,” he said. (via PNA)
