MindanaoHerald | Surigao City will build a P100 million fish dock and mariculture park | BUTUAN CITY – Through a project plan worth PHP100 million sent to the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), the city government of Surigao has taken steps to build a mariculture park and improve its fish landing port.
In a talk on Tuesday, Robbie Ruaya, head of the Surigao City Public Information Office, said that PFDA Gen. Manager Glen Pangapalan and Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao had already surveyed the proposed 25-hectare mariculture park in Barangay Nabago and the existing fish landing port in Barangay Baybay on Monday.
According to Ruaya, the mariculture park project has already been evaluated, surveyed, and given a technical assessment. “The project will directly benefit the fisherfolk of Barangay Nabago and its nearby areas,” she said.
She said that the evaluation done by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources was necessary to get the Environmental Compliance Certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Dumlao said in a separate statement on Tuesday that the city government wants to build a state-of-the-art fish landing station.
“The two projects will also protect fish and manage the city’s marine resources in a way that doesn’t harm them over time,” Dumlao said. “The goal is to improve fish availability and food security.”
He also said that the two projects would create ways for people to make a living through things like seaweed farming, mussel farming, pearl farming, and new ways of raising sea animals. (via PNA)
