MindanaoHerald | Start making plans for BARMM international airport | COTABATO CITY – Officials said Monday that the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao government has started laying the foundation for a big infrastructure project that will boost the region’s tourism and economy.
This happened after officials from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) looked around Barangay Tambo in Sultan Mastura, Maguindanao del Norte, earlier this month.
Officials from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), through the Bangsamoro Airport Authority (BAA), led the inspection of the planned site facility, along with people from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Sultan Mastura town government.
Hanamir Emblawa, MOTC BAA officer-in-charge director, said in an interview, “This project is just the beginning of more collaborations from BAA and MOTC to the LGU of Sultan Mastura, as there are concerns to be established in future projects related to the development of this project.”
The planned multi-million airport will be built on the 200-hectare lot, which will include a 3.2-kilometer runway.
The mayor of Sultan Mastura, Zulficar Panda, said that the project is expected to help the local business in Sultan Mastura, especially in the Iranun corridor.
The Iranun passage is made up of the Maguindanao-Iranun towns of Sultan Mastura, Parang, Barira, Buldon, and Matanog, all of which are in the northern part of Maguindanao Norte.
“It’s a good thing for us because it will help our economy and bring more jobs to the area,” Panda said.
Panda praised BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim for putting money into infrastructure projects in the Iranun municipalities. These projects include the proposed move of the BARMM regional centre to Parang town, which is next to Sultan Mastura municipality, the opening of the Polloc free port, and the planned international airport.
The three projects are in line with the enhanced BARMM 12-point priority agenda, which aims to build a system of reliable and resilient air transport and other strategic infrastructure to spur economic growth in the area. (via PNA)
