MindanaoHerald | First Mindanawon prexy installed by UP | DAVAO CITY – The state-run University of the Philippines (UP) on Thursday appointed a Mindanawon as its next president for the first time.
Angelo Jimenez, a lawyer, was solemnly installed as the 22nd president of the institution during an investiture ceremony at the UP-Mindanao Campus in this city’s Tugbok area.
Moreover, Jimenez, who was born in Butuan City, is the first Manobo to hold the position. In 2007, he received the honorific “Datu Mankalagan” from the tribe.
Taking inspiration from and being guided by his indigenous heritage, Jimenez said he seeks to highlight the view from the periphery and present a distinctive viewpoint on how UP may continue to contribute to national development.
He stated in an interview that his government intends to increase access to high-quality UP education through a variety of programmes, delivery systems, and collaborations with SUCs around the Philippines.
According to Jimenez, he plans to work to raise money for the incomplete structures and hopes to create a medical school.
It tells us something about what we, the Mindanawons, had to deal with that it took the national university 115 years to elect a president from Mindanao. Additionally, it reveals how the world is altering — not naturally, but as a result of our tireless efforts, according to Jimenez.
The university’s three missions—teaching, research, and public service—would be carried out under his direction, he asserted.
“The objective is to transform UP into a complete research institution, and we will work with SUCs in two areas, namely faculty development and curriculum development. According to him, UP may learn from our SUCs because they are also quite advanced.
He listed digital transformation, in addition to research, as one of his top priorities. This entails enhancing human resources and giving them access to technology so they may operate and be more effectively.
“Under my leadership, UP will fulfil this obligation as an institution by assisting other SUCs in their work by contributing its expertise and resources. The collaborative production of knowledge among peers will be our watchword here, according to Jimenez.
